As this month is the #MarchMeetTheMaker Challenge over on instagram I thought I'd take the opportunity to tell you a bit more about myself and the businesses I run.
This is me, I'm Jemma Jayne Jones (it's a great super hero alias name!) Known to most as Jem or SockJems and by a few as Saveloy, two puds and a few other choice names that I won't put on here as it would bring the tone down far too much!
I'm the face behind SockJems Creations and in the last year Frock It Up by SockJems Creations too, I am a unicorn believing geek with a love of all things quirky and unique. I am a wife to my wonderful Husband Mr SockJems and a mother to my 2 amazing ( yet trying ) boys and have 2 Cats Chester and Vader who love to sit in stupid places.
A few random facts about me:
I am a stationary freak! I love to hoard notebooks but can't bring myself to use them, they are looking at notebooks! I have a fear of potatoes thanks to finding one so covered in eyes in the back of a cupboard when I was a child that It has traumatised me for life. I love to cosplay and am slowly building up a wardrobe of costumes for when I trade at cons, so far we have Chell for Portal, Miss Joker, 1950's Harley, Pikachu and Wonderwoman. For my next event I am trying to choose between Link from Legend of Zelda and a female Han Solo, opinions?
When I have time off I like to go to fancy tea rooms or coffee shops with my friends, mooch around charity shops or carboot sales for vintage My Little Ponies and care bears or play computer games with my family ( I'd like to be able to say something cocky, like I am the Mario Kart champion in our house but alas I would be lying )
I started SockJems in 2011 because I wanted to use my creativity for good. I started making Sock Creatures but quickly realised that wasn't enough for me and I wanted to do more so I started to make all manner of homeware, fashion and jewellery items and SockJems Creations was born! During that time I started to make my own clothes, disappointed that being a curvy girl meant I couldn't buy clothes from the shops that held my ideal fashion choices, after 4 years of teaching myself and improving my skills I finally decided after people kept asking me to open a dress making side to my business and started Frock It Up about a year ago. I didn't want to exclude people from quirky fashions the way highstreet stores do so at the moment I make dresses in sizes 10-26 with a view to make larger sizes soon. Since opening the Frock It up side of the business you guys have loved the opportunity to have custom made bags and purses made and this has really taken off.
Everything you see for sale or custom made on the facebook pages or webshop are made entirely by me, I hand cut everything and sew on my domestic sewing machine myself. I have my fantastic admin assistant Lisa to help with Frock It Up so I can spend more time working on your lovely orders but everything is made by me, this is why sometimes waiting times can be up to 6 weeks long for custom orders. I am developing and searching for new patterns and fabrics all the time too.
I am so lucky to do something for a living that I love and makes me happy and I am so grateful to all you awesome people out there making it possible for me to do this, thank you each and everyone of you who has ever liked or shared one of our Facebook posts, commented on items, told your friends and family about us and bought from us, you make it possible for me to do something I love.
